This panel is an open format for thinking about the archive and the palimpsest in creative and multi-perspective ways. It proposes a collective contribution by artists and researchers from Morocco and Germany who have already been working together around questions of contemporary artistic practices in relation to the document, the archive, and an im/possible exchange, which has led to a framing of this program in terms of an "archive of promise". For the MSA conference in Newcastle we would like to develop translations of an "archive of promise" into a "futuristic palimpsest," by experimenting with creative forms of weaving and mining which combine artistic and theoretical approaches to memory and oblivion. These translations focus on the archive of our own experiences around exchange, non/mobility, and collective creation during the Covid19 pandemic, and thus open a reflection about recent transformations of encounter from different geographical and cultural contexts. Based on these personal and intersubjective reflections we want to develop ideas and creative forms around notions of the archive and the palimpsest that are future oriented, collaborative, and translational. We propose a round table discussion to present creative forms and strategies in dealing with the archive and the palimpsest in conceptual and material ways, using these notions as frameworks to reflect but also to create modes of remembering and forgetting, involving practices of collecting, selecting, and rearranging materials as well as deconstructing, overwriting, and translating dimensions of meaning. As common ground and in connection to histories of Newcastle, we refer to notions of mining and weaving. USB G.003 MSA Conference Newcastle 2023 conference@memorystudiesassociation.orgThis panel is an open format for thinking about the archive and the palimpsest in creative and multi-perspective ways.
While mining associates archaeologies or genealogies of the archive and the palimpsest as well as extraction, exploitation, and ruination, weaving rather opens to horizontal ways of relating and layering different forms and signs, colors and materials, times and patterns.
Along with the round table presentation of works and discussions we will develop during the next months, we would also like to create a curated space for presenting collective works that use weaving and mining not only as critical tools for analyzing inscriptions of power and dominance in the archive and on the palimpsest, but also as creative practices of promise and future visions.
