This special session presents the development, structure, and logic of the recently published Routledge Handbook of Memory Activism 2022, that prepares the ground for a new field of knowledge in Memory Studies. Each member of the editorial team will briefly introduce their section and then two commentators will provide a global assessment of the volume and the field of memory activism. We will discuss how the Handbook approaches salient debates that have shaped the "activist turn" in Memory Studies, including whether a clear line can be drawn between studying and practicing memory activism and how to address a possible progressive bias in memory activism studies. We will discuss the institutions, actors, spaces and practices that need to be considered, as well as key normative dilemmas that are raised in this field. Christina Morina and Jeffrey Olick will discuss how they see the Handbook's contribution to Memory Studies, as well as what future directions the field may take.
