The proposed roundtable aims to spark reflections and create a place to share thoughts around the concept of care in memory practices, especially through the concept of "body". By memory practices we understand the actions dealing with the traces – material or not – of the past. Participants are invited to present on care and memory from different disciplines like anthropology, art history or history, decolonial feminism, among others. In so doing, they are encouraged to touch upon different aspects such as the relationship between memory practices and forms of care (e.g., how exhuming a body means caring for the dead); the types of care involved in dealing with the traces of past violence (e.g., through the handling of personal or institutional archives of images, documents and objects); the ways in which bodies carry the marks of past atrocity or past care and how these are revealed through acts of memory, the gendered experience of memory work (e.g., through an exploration of feminist approaches) or important methodological and ethical aspects of memory-related research (e.g., writing with care, caring for participants and ourselves as researchers in vulnerable contexts, or considering the ethics of dealing with sensitive stories and materials). All these aspects are intertwined with the concept of body and with bodily practices: care in memory practices can imply relating to bodies and thinking about the experiences they undergo. It can entail a reflection on transmission and on the ways difficult pasts come to be known through subtle bodily actions, and other communicative expressions during or in the aftermath of mass violence. In this sense, the goal of the roundtable is to keep building on debates that connect theories of memory and care, exploring the intricacies and ramifications of their ongoing relation.
