SHORTS: Mother/Country and Closer (dir. Tina Gharavi)

Session Information

Mother/CountryOver 20 years ago, at the age of six, director TinaGharavi left Iran and her mother to live with her father in the West. This intensely personal film follows her as she returns for the first time, to confront her past and attempt to gain answers from her mother about why she was sent away. Mother/Country is an experimental documentary originally broadcast on Channel Four TV in the UK and Sundance Channel in the US.

CloserThis stunningly shot experimental documentary has at its heart a poignant character study of a 17-year-old lesbian living in Newcastle, England. Closer innovatively explores the process of documentary filmmaking and boldly challenges traditional forms of storytelling. Fiction and documentary collide in this gripping film as "scenes" from the main subject's life are re-enacted for the camera.

Tina Gharavi, founder of Bridge + Tunnel, is a BAFTA-nominated filmmaker, academic and equality campaigner born in Iran, educated in the US and France. Gharavi is noted for innovative cross-platform work on migration and much of her work supports outsiders, outcasts and refugees to tell their own stories.
