Communities & Change Exhibition: 3 – 7 July

This exhibition draws together nine installations by local and international artists. We invite you to start at the centre, with two installations that respond to the Tyne and its post-industrial legacies. 'Shipbuilding on the Tyne' by Amber Film and Photography Collective, active in the region since 1969, presents its memory work with primary school children, learning about the shipbuilding that shaped their local area for 150 years but which many of them are learning about for the first time. Another intergenerational work, 'Memory and Reinvention' presents university students' reimaginings of the river.
Henna Asikainen's 'Delicate Shuttle' reminds us that this has always been a place of change. The sense of loss faced by those who lived through local workers' struggles against deindustrialisation are mirrored in those who have arrived here from afar. The White Poplar itself is a migrant, the leaves that make up this work were foraged during walks with those who have sought sanctuary in the city.
These themes flow through to explorations of governmentality and of migration in 'People on the Move'. Installations 'The Becoming of Absence', 'Transitional Objects' and '120 Steps and a Cup of Coffee' each explore the meaning of place and the navigation of difficult pasts, offering an opportunity to consider how such experiences are both locally grounded and globally shared.
Shifting in scale, 'Where will we go' uses the process of walking and foraging to explore the loss of a twin from a multiple pregnancy. Even in such intimate contexts, community is part of the memory process.

The exhibition opening on Monday 3 July will feature a special performance by Skimstone Arts Ensemble of three original songs inspired by the conference theme. Please note: this event has a paid bar, with profits supporting NCA.
